Memories

On Weds. last week I had a blast from the past. I was running a transaction for a customer in the drive through and I recognized his name. He and I weren't good friends, but just 5th grade acquaintances. I wasn't sure if it was him or not but when I heard him talk and saw the shape of his head I knew it was him. I didn't tell him who I was, didn't feel appropriate. It's very interesting how Ross and I were basically in the same place a decade ago. I don't know much about him other than he's married and banks at Regions. I'll say something next time, if there is a next time... It should be interesting.

Lingo

The other day an officer of the bank when referring to money that was neither here nor there said it was in, "lingo." My coworkers talk about threatening to call their live in boyfriends' parole officer. All I do is ask people how they like the weather.

I need a new job.

Rich People

A quote from Dave Ramsey on the radio...

"Rich people don't think it's fun to to lose money, that's how they got to become RICH PEOPLE!"

Going to see Dave live November 15th.

Living like no one else is becoming living like everyone else. Keep up the good work.

Judging a Book by it's cover....

We get two kinds of construction workers at the bank. The one (more common) comes in, doesn't have an account for whatever reason and cashes his check every other Friday. We charge them $5 to cash a check and offer to waive the fee for ever if they just open an account. Every week they say no, each has a reason, none are legit.

The other construction worker comes in and cashes a large check (2-3k). He asks for certain bills and then goes out to his truck and pays his workers. Both lead lives I hardly envy.

Last Friday a Mexican man walked in and took him for the first construction worker. He met the physical description to the letter. Dirty, typical construction tee shirt, torn jeans and all. He shocked me when he told me he wanted the balance of his account. What really surprised me was that his balance was just shy of $150,000. (that's american dollars)

Yeah, just when you think you know what to expect from people a guy with the ability to write a $100,000 check wearing dirty jeans asks you for his balance.

Update

Well, to all who are wondering... I have made it back from the wedding and honeymoon. Staci and I are figuring out how to be married. I think it is going great so far. We both appreciate the company and the power of two worker around the house/incomes/personalities. I'm going to strongly recommend this whole marriage thing, but make sure you find the right one. Find someone you just like to be around, who shares many of the same views as you, but also challenges you to become a better person every day.

Preparing for the big day.

I've never felt like this in my life. For about 2 weeks I've just been anxious/nervous. I know what it is, and I know why it is. It is very legitimate, just different. Saturday I give my life to Staci Michelle Schwarze. It's a big deal. It's a day I've looked forward to for about 2 years now. I know it is right, I know it is good. That doesn't mean I know it will be easy. Both of us expect it to be difficult. Not unbearable, just challenging. I know plenty of people I respect that love being married, and that is what I'm looking forward to. Standing in front of 310 people, being emotional, bearing my feelings... that's what I'm thinking about.

In the mean time I need to get back to making a cd composed of enya, kenny g and harry connick jr.

A good attitude might not cure all of your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth your effort.

Mike Vick

I just was watching ESPN and saw Mike Vick's press conference where he said that through his dog fighting ordeal he found Jesus and had given his life to God. Interesting when people find Jesus...

Why do I like what I like?

Some things can grow on a guy (and no, I'm not talking about fungus.) I have been a listener to talk radio for the past 3 years or so, but not the kind I listen to now. I have liked ESPN Radio for ever, but now I have begun listening to FMTalk 93.9. It is a conservative talk radio station. Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, and the other person I listen to is Dave Ramsey. One thing I noticed is how opinionated they are. For a while it was getting on my nerves how what they said was the bottom line. They will not hear any opposing opinions. If they do they call them idiots, or any other sundry of words. Hannity makes fun of his opposing democrats. Savage has a book that is entitled Liberalism Is a Mental Disorder. All of this extreme opinion is a little taxing at times. No one is really as staunch as these guys come across. But I have come to realize that it is part of the show. People do not tune in to hear, "I think this... but I am not sure." They tune in for an opinion, even if they do not agree. Some people will tune in to hear their positions supported, and others tune in to become enraged at what they think is blasphemy. It is interesting to think about...

Should have been a meteorologist

Well, I am half way through my second week at the bank, and I have come to one conclusion. I should have gotten my degree in meteorology. It is remarkable how useless a degree in Finance is, even though I am working at a bank! People come up to you and say, "Man, it's hot out side!" "Do you think it's going to rain?" "I can't wait for fall." Without fail, people ask me more about weather than anything else.

This WILL be a movie some day...

The life and times of Rick Ankiel

Early career

At Port St. Lucie High School in Florida, Ankiel went 11-1 with a 0.47 ERA during his senior season, striking out 162 batters in 74.0 innings pitched, and was named the High School Player of the Year by USA Today in 1997, and was also named first team High School All-American pitcher.

He signed with the Cardinals straight out of high school, given a $2.5 million signing bonus, the fifth highest ever given to an amateur player. In 1998 he was Carolina League All-Star starting pitcher, Baseball America 1st team Minor League All-Star starting pitcher and voted the best pitching prospect in both the Carolina and Midwest leagues, and Cardinals Minor League Player of the Year.

In 1999, he was named the Minor League Player of the Year by both USA Today and Baseball America. He was also Texas League All-Star pitcher, Double-A All-Star starting pitcher, Cardinals Minor League Player of the Year, and Baseball America 1st team Minor League All-Star starting pitcher. He was considered one of the finest pitching prospects in several years.

[edit] Major Leagues

Ankiel debuted in 1999 in Montreal, against the Expos. He pitched his first full season in 2000 at the age of 20 (2nd youngest in the league), in which he posted an 11-7 record and a 3.50 ERA (9th in the league) and 194 strikeouts (7th in the league) in 30 games started for St. Louis. The most impressive of Ankiel's stats showed his dominance over hitters - he struck out batters at a rate of 9.98 strikeouts per nine innings (second in the National League only to Randy Johnson), and allowed only 7.05 hits per nine innings (second only to Chan Ho Park). He came in second (to Atlanta's Rafael Furcal) in the NL Rookie of the Year voting.

Ankiel threw a fastball in the 94-97 MPH range, and also possessed a heavy sinker with great movement, as well as his main strikeout pitch, a devastating 12-to-6 curveball.

[edit] Downfall

The Cardinals won the National League Central Division championship in 2000. Injuries to other pitchers left Ankiel and Darryl Kile as the only fully healthy starters left on the Cardinal roster. Wanting to maximize their appearances, and due to the fact that Ankiel, only 20 years old and without much major league experience, needed four days of rest between starts, manager Tony La Russa chose Ankiel to start Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves, against veteran Braves pitcher Greg Maddux. Also wanting to shield Ankiel from the inevitable pressures of such a role, La Russa had Kile answer questions to the media as if he were starting Game 1, and it was only afterwards that he informed media members that Ankiel was in fact starting.

The Cardinals jumped to a lead early in Game 1, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ankiel had walked two batters in the top of the first, as well as allowed a single, but escaped unscathed. He also allowed a double in the second inning, after striking out the leadoff batter, but ended the inning with a double play. It was in the third inning that Ankiel lost control. Here is the play-by-play from that inning:

Maddux walked; Furcal popped to Clark in foul territory; Ankiel threw a wild pitch (Maddux to second); Ankiel threw a wild pitch (Maddux to third); A. Jones walked; Ankiel threw a wild pitch (A. Jones to 2nd); C. Jones was called out on strikes; Galarraga walked (Maddux scored on wild pitch by Ankiel; A. Jones to 3rd); Jordan singled to Lankford (A. Jones scored, Galarraga to 2nd); Ankiel threw a wild pitch (Galarraga to 3rd, Jordan to 2nd); Sanders walked; Weiss singled to Lankford (Galarraga scored, Jordan scored, Sanders to 2nd); Mike James replaced Ankiel; López popped to Viña; 4 R, 2 H, 0 E, 2 LOB. Braves 4, Cardinals 6.

Ankiel shrugged off the event at first, joking about the fact that he was the first pitcher to throw five wild pitches in an inning since Bert Cunningham of the Players League in 1890. But in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series against the New York Mets, Ankiel was removed in the first inning. Of only 20 pitches thrown by Ankiel, five went past catcher Eli Marrero, including two official wild pitches. Ankiel appeared again in the seventh inning of game five, facing four hitters, walking two, and throwing two more wild pitches. The Cardinals lost the series four games to one to the Mets.

The source of Ankiel's problems was apparently not mechanical.[1] For that reason his decline has been compared to that of Steve Blass, who also became unable to consistently throw strikes for mysterious reasons.

[edit] Aftermath

Ankiel returned to the majors in 2001 but again had issues controlling his pitches, walking 25 batters and throwing 5 wild pitches in 24 innings, and was sent down to AAA. Here his problems became incredibly dramatic. In 4.1 innings, Ankiel walked an amazing 17 batters and threw 12 wild pitches, accumulating an ERA of 20.77. He was sent all the way down to the Rookie League Johnson City Cardinals, where he was successful as both a starting pitcher and a part-time designated hitter (sporting a .638 slugging percentage with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs in 105 at bats)[2]. He was voted Rookie Level Player of the Year, Appalachian League All-Star left handed pitcher, Rookie League All-Star starting pitcher, Appalachian League Pitcher of the Year, and Appalachian League All-Star designated hitter.

In 2002, Ankiel missed the whole season with a left elbow sprain. After being cleared to throw off the mound in December of that year, Ankiel returned to the minors in 2003, posting a 6.20 ERA in 10 starts before undergoing, in July, season-ending Tommy John surgery for his left elbow. In 54.1 innings he walked 49 batters and threw 10 wild pitches.

Ankiel returned to the majors in September 2004, posting a 5.40 ERA in five relief appearances. Ankiel's control was impressive, as he walked just one while striking out nine in ten innings. In the minors, similarly, he walked only 2 batters in 23.2 innings, while striking out 23.

On March 9, 2005, after a successful winter pitching in the Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League, Ankiel suddenly announced that he was switching to the outfield[3], after an unsuccessful practice outing in which his wildness reappeared, as he threw only three strikes out of 20 pitches. He slugged .514 in single A, and .515 in double A, with 5 outfield assists in 55 games.

In 2006, Ankiel was invited to spring training with the major league squad again, but this time as an outfielder. He had a slim chance to make the team as a reserve player. His fielding impressed scouts and managers, and he has shown flashes of power hitting in the minor leagues. [4] However, he injured his left knee before the season started; he had to have season-ending surgery on it on May 26, 2006.

[edit] 2007 season

Ankiel was invited to the Cardinals' 2007 spring training. In mid-March manager Tony LaRussa said Ankiel probably didn't figure into the mix at the big-league level, but rather needed to play regularly at Class AAA Memphis as he continued his conversion from pitching. "It isn't because he isn't capable," La Russa said. "(But) unless you can guarantee that he would get 400 or 500 at-bats, it would be a bad move for him and for us."[5]

On Memorial Day May 28, 2007 Ankiel hit two home runs in Round Rock, Texas against the Round Rock Express. He also hit an RBI double and made a running over-the-shoulder catch in deep center field that saved two runs.

Ankiel was named a starting outfielder for the 2007 Triple-A All-Star Game. Through August 8, he had 32 home runs, 89 RBIs and was hitting .267, including a 3 home run performance on June 16th at Iowa. Defensively, Ankiel had 7 errors in 95 games, and was the current HR leader in the Pacific Coast League at the time of his callup.

[edit] Return to the Majors

On August 9, 2007, the Cardinals promoted Ankiel from AAA Memphis after a roster spot was vacated by Scott Spiezio due to a self reported drug problem. Ankiel batted second and played right field. In his first game in his return to the big leagues, Ankiel hit a three run home run off Doug Brocail to right field in his fourth at bat in the seventh inning to help the Cardinals defeat the San Diego Padres, 5-0. He finished 1-for-4 on the game with two strikeouts and a pop-up to the shortstop.[6]

My oh My

It has been a while since I have posted. I am now under 60 days until I watch Staci walk down the isle. Seems like a long ways off, but also I know it will be here fast. September 22nd. I am looking forward to it. That walk from her apartment to mine is a little annoying. I have really enjoyed having here right here rather than in Marion, and since we don't have homework, we can spend all evening together.

The last few weeks have been particularly interesting for me. I quit my job at Atlantic Mortgage. It was ok, I just wasn't making any money. Thats not a good thing for a job. Hobbies are ok to not make money, jobs are not. So I decided to make a move. The job I thought I was walking into actually took about 6 weeks to secure. I wish I would have known that...

One thing I have noticed is how generally dissatisfied my peers are with their work. One friend graduated w/ a 3.99 in marketing and after one month thinks she wants to teach. Another walked into a very good program for management and now thinks she may want to work in a flower shop. My former roommate was "let go" after 5 months of work. Another guy worked at his job for 5 weeks and quit. And yet another for 4 weeks and quit.

I don't know that many of us were prepared for working. Not that we were incapable, but we were not prepared to dislike our jobs. If we didn't like our classes we changed majors. If we didn't like our profs., we took it with another. I think the reality is few people walk into 50k jobs, fewer walk into 50k jobs that they love.

We are freshman again. For the 3rd time. We have a lot of ambition and big dreams, but we are the youngest and least experienced, and therefore have the most work to do. As a senior you can do almost nothing and succeed. As a freshman you can work your tail off and fail.

Here's to another few years of bottom feeding.

Hate Crime

I was a victim of a hate crime. Sad, but true. I have never known what it is like to be the minority. Now I know. My car was keyed by one of my neighbors. It was an unsolicited random act of violence. I do not understand why someone would destroy another's property without cause. I guess all I can do is pray for them... And hope it doesn't happen again. :(

I made the Sermon!

I did something I have never done before, to my knowledge. This weekend was IWU's graduation. I was sitting next to Rob (My future Father-in-law) and we were talking about graduation. He told me that the oldest person to graduate was 94 (plus or minus). I had heard that if you have a college education your earning power doubles typically. I said, "I wonder if that is the case for her?" He told the story the next day in church! I am a part of the family!

Resume

(Fortune) -- You've worked hard on your resume, trying to squeeze all your experience in and make yourself stand out from the crowd, and chances are you've done a pretty good job. But even if your resume isn't perfect, it's unlikely to include any real howlers.

Not everybody can say that. Job site CareerBuilders.com recently asked pollsters Harris Interactive to survey hiring managers and find out the wackiest resume items they've seen lately. Out of 2,627 responses, here are the top ten:

A job candidate...

1. ... attached a letter from her mother.

2. ... used pale blue paper with teddy bears printed around the border.

3. ... explained a three-month gap in employment by saying that he was getting over the death of his cat.

4. ... specified that his availability to work Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays is limited because the weekends are "drinking time."

5. ... included a picture of herself in a cheerleading uniform.

6. ... drew a picture of a car on the outside of the envelope and said the car would be a gift to the hiring manager.

7. ... listed hobbies that included sitting on a levee at night watching alligators.

8. ... mentioned the fact that her sister had once won a strawberry-eating contest.

9. ... stated that he works well in the nude.

10. ... explained an arrest record by stating, "We stole a pig, but it was a really small pig."

Feel better now?

Short Guy Tall Guy

I heard yesterday, that there is study out that suggests that the taller a guy is the more attractive he is to women. And also, the more money he makese, the more attractive he is to women. They say that on average a 5'4" guy has to make 292,000 more per year to get the same girl as a 6' guy. Remarkable. I guess I'm cool, as I am 5'11" and a half. Plus I already have the most beautiful girl in the world anyway.

Good Description!

While this story will officially let everyone know who reads it that I am a huge nerd, I am going to tell it anyway, because I feel it is my duty! I was watching Wheel of Fortune, like I do every day, last night, and this butch lady won. When you win you get to introduce the people you brought along. The camera panned to the people that were in the audience and there were three guys. Well, atleast that's what I saw... One of the guys was named Cheryll and it was very confusing. This guy, her "partner" had very narrow shoulders and it looked like very saggy big pectoral muscles. I didn't really understand.

I wonder where the winner's husband was...?

Pat Sagact in his infinte wisdom told her that she did a good job describing her relationship to those people. I wonder what he was thinking about!

My arm is tingly...

So about a week ago, I started to notice a little bump on my arm. I thought it might be an ingrown hair or something along those lines, but upon further review it is probably a cyst (according to Mom M.D.) She gave me a little remedy a couple days ago, and today I talked to her on the phone and said, my arm is all swollen and tingly. She with great concern said, "Hun, you probably need to go see a doctor." I said, "I'm just kidding, it's getting better." She laughed a lot and I thought it was hilarious. Anyway... I hope you weren't grossed out by that! Enjoy your weekend!

ESPN Radio Moment of the Day

Colin Cowherd was reliving what took place in his hotel last night. He said the couple next door wouldn't knock it off and there was a band playing down the hall. He said, "I know there are a lot of good looking people in Los Angeles, and I know good looking people make out all the time, but can't their be a curfew on the sex?" He then went on to say, "Good looking people make out all the time in Los Angeles, I mean, I went to the grocery store and people were making out all over the place."

Unbelieveable.

With my luck...

Why is it that no one has good luck? I cannot believe it. Have you ever heard one of my favorite expressions, "If I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck at all?" I heard this phrase for the 10,000th time today, "With my luck..." Does nobody ever get lucky? (snicker snicker) But seriously, have you ever heard someone say, "With my luck I'd win the lottery today." Or, "With my luck I'll live a happy healthy life."

Somebody has to have good luck. If no one has good luck, then we all have good luck.

Think about that one for a while.

Shiney Happy People Holding Hands

I had a great time last weekend. A week ago today was my first day in Florida, hanging out, catching sun, catching fish, catching mosquito bites. I had my eyes opened however, which I think is often the case whenever you are in one place for a while when you travel. I was sitting in the airport reading a book in Baltimore (BWI) and I heard a guy talking on the cell phone. His voice was a little funny so I looked up at him. He had something in his mouth that I assumed to be tobacco. This explained the funny voice, and upon further inspection he had his whole bottom lip filled with chew. It was disgusting.

I got up to walk around and I saw 2 flight attendants sitting awkwardly close together. They were very well kept, and wearing their uniforms. Not an uncommon sight I'm sure except these GUYS were obviously pursuing a different lifestyle than am I.

Then I walked past a Aunt Anne's looking to grab a pretzel but they were not doing business because one of their employees was being placed on a stretcher. She passed out or something. She couldn't have been older than 25.

We went to the Imperial Buffet on Thursday or Friday. It was terrible, and the people were very... eclectic. Many of them seemed to be... Well I doubt their family tree branched that much. I think one of them was the star of the song, "I'm my own grandpa." I was wearing gym shorts and a tee shirt, no shoes and I was OVER dressed.

I guess there are different people and different ways of life outside of Carmel, IN.

TXT

Verizon, Sprint, and Cingular are teaming together to fight a new epidemic that is sweeping the nation. Many people have been receiving text messages from people they do not know. The cell phone giants are asking their customers to screen their messages, and practice quote, "safe text." They also are encourageing their customers to ask their textual partners about their textual history.

Think IWU will buy it? We'll see!

Tom Brady part 2.

So, the news on ESPN today is that Tom Brady knocked up his ex. One caller called in and asked Colin Cowherd, "Isn't he dating like the hottest model in the world?" He said, "No, he's dating Janet Reno, and he just broke up with Margret Thatcher."

TV Comercials

I just went out to lunch to a nice little place down the road called the Earl of Sandwich. I'm not sure I like it, but I like the name of the place, which is probably why I went there. Plus the last two times I have gone I ordered the origonal which has Horse Radish (sp?) sauce and the thought of it makes me ill. I guess I forgot how much I do not like that sauce. Anyway, they have a nice big TV there and it was on NBC. A comercial came up that I'm sure many of you have seen that is nothing but a girl and a guy making out. At the end it says get ready for Valentines Day. Go to Rembrandt.com. There were a couple of guys in the restraunt that were not watching until that comercial came on. Then as soon as another comercial came on they went about their business.

I think it is remarkable how all guys are wired the same way. The media does not kid around either. They will do anything to get your attention. I make no plans on going to rembrandt.com but I remember that comercial better than any in recent history.

Thursday Night

Last night I went to work out. I got to the gym around 8:30, and the first thing I always do when I work out is warm up. I do about 20-30 minutes of cardio on a bike or stair climber. This accomplishes three purposes. It warms my body up to prepare for stretching and lifting. It gives me a little cardio workout. Lastly it is a good workout for my legs. Then I will lift either upper or lower body, depending on how I feel. Anyway, while I was on the bike the Office came on. Obviously there was no sound, so I had to read the subtitles. It was still hilarious. But probably the funniest part was the sight of this 21 year old goof ball pedaling away, looking up and too the left and laughing about every 3 minutes. I felt like such a loser, but I got to hang out w/ Dwight Schrute and Michael Scott.

An Update on My Life

Well, I am at work. I just had my lunch. It was my usual, PB&J, cheeze-it's and a nectar. I am listening to ESPN radio on the internet. I really like the shows on there. Mike and Mike, Colin Cowherd, Dan Patrick. These people get me through my day. Today and the last week has been pretty crazy. My first two deals are coming together. It is a little stressful. I do not know exactly what needs to take place and it gets me a little worked up. The good news is for some reason, by the grace of God, I have been blessed with things coming together that have shocked people that are in this business every day. That's good. Another nice thing is I am only dealing with friends at this point and I know they are willing to be gracious. :) thanks guys if you read this!

American Idol

I am at work, (listening to ESPN radio), and they are talking about this silly show that I've never watched. The guy on the radio (Eric) is talking about the categories of TV shows. There are 4. 1, you have to watch it. If you are not, you're a loser. 2. It is ok, if you watch it you're ok. 3. is if you are with your wife or girlfriend it's ok. 4. Watch it under no circumstances. The guy proposes that American Idol can be all 4! It's really funny. Some people set their weekly schedules around this show, and they cannot do anything but watch it when it's on. I haven't watched, but i'm pretty sure I would not fall in love with it. I have a hard time keeping track with a handful of characters, so they're all the same to me. They all sing good, and I doubt my favorite would win. I do like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Couldn't tell you the names of any other winners though.

Remarkable Timing

I have impeccably remarkable timing. Two weeks ago I signed up for Netflix. Netflix is an Internet based company that will send you a DVD of your choosing and you send it back and they send you another movie for a relatively small monthly fee. It is a good system and works really well. The usual turn around time is 2-3 days. I was so excited about seeing all the movies I had wanted to see but not spend 3.50 on. When you have unlimited rentals, you watch movies you've already seen, or wanted to see but had not yet. Later that night, of the day I signed up, I saw an advertisement for blockbuster's service that had the exact same features at the exact same price plus the option to return your movie to one of their brick and mortar stores at no charge other than the montly fee. I finished out my 2 week free trial of netflix today and signed up for blockbuster. I then saw this web site today.

http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/articlenews.aspx?type=internetNews&storyID=2007-01-16T172837Z_01_N11457284_RTRIDST_0_OUKIN-UK-NETFLIX-DOWNLOAD.XML&WTmodLoc=TechInternet-C4-Internet-9

That link goes to a story that details the launch of Netflix new service that allows you to watch movies on your computer from a streaming feed off their servers at no extra charge.

Maybe I should do some research in the future when it comes to what services I subscribe to!

Blessings

So, I'm pretty sure I got had on that ebay deal. I wasn't careful enough and the ps3 is on it's way to Africa and I haven't seen a nickle. But that isn't what this is about. I have really been blessed by God over the last couple of months. Staci told me she would marry me, and nothing has ever made me happier! I got a job, that I am enjoying right now. IWU sent me a check for about $600 a week ago, and that financial blessing is much appreciated. I graduated in December and am enjoying the freedom of not going to class every day. I just wanted to let the world know that I am very thankful for all of this!

Update on Ebay

Well, I never heard back from that guy. I'm guessing either it wasn't legit, or he found someone else who responded more quickly (I had to wait until monday and he sent it on Sunday). But the good news is I sold it for 810 (including shipping). But I have to ship it to Africa. I figure the most that will be is $100, so I've made probably $50 or so. I'll take it!

Ebay

So, I decided to go out on a limb this weekend. For the first time in months I saw a PS3 for sale at Wal-Mart. These things were a secondary market gold mine before Christmas. Now, well, I'm not sure. I decided I could buy it and always take it back. Thank you Wal-Mart! I posted it on Ebay later that night. I saw that the consoles are no longer selling for 1000's but they are doing ok. I got an email this morning and a guy offered me 1800. Not sure what to think! I'm trying to get a hold of him to see what he is all about, as I am not going to ship $600 unless I get mine. I really hope it works out! I'll keep you posted!
